3-D printing technology is being harnessed to take pesky plastic waste to make human waste disappear via composting toilets.

The concept won the $100,000 top prize earlier this month?in the 3D4D Challenge, a contest where teams presented ideas to leverage the fast evolving field of 3-D printing technology to deliver real social benefits in the developing world.

The winning team from University of Washington will invest the prize money to form a non-profit organization?and collaborate with Oaxaca, Mexico-based Water for Humans to create composting latrines and rainwater harvesting systems.

3-D printers are poised to revolutionize manufacturing. Akin to?a traditional inkjet printer, they squirt out liquid material following instructions from a computer. But instead of stopping at one layer of ink, these machines print in three dimensions by putting one layer on top of another.

To do this, traditional ink is replaced with materials that harden with each pass of the nozzle. This can be plastics in the case of?trinkets such as a Yoda statue or a model airplane that can fly.?

Team leader Matthew Rogge and his colleagues aim to use waste plastics such as milk jugs and soda bottles as the source material for their printer, and use it to build latrines that use less energy to manufacture than concrete toilets.

The team will also use the printer to make parts for rainwater collection systems that will be more robust than the typical cobbled-together-from-spare-plumbing-parts versions found in the developing world.

As a proof-of-concept, earlier this year the team printed a life-size boat from more than 250 plastic milk jugs using their custom built Big Red printer. The entered the boat in a milk jug derby and took second place.

The concept for the toilet grew out of Rogge?s work in the Peace Corps building water and irrigation systems in Ghana, Panama and Bolivia. Building custom parts in these low-resources countries, he said, was frustrating.

When he learned about 3-D printing technology, he decided to go back to school to learn how to use it. Winning the $100,000 prize, he said, is like a dream come true.

?I feel lucky to have the chance to start making our ideas into reality,? he said in a news release. ?There is a great potential here to improve people?s quality of life while taking plastic out of the waste stream.?

President Barack Obama laid out an astoundingly ambitious second-term agenda in an interview published Wednesday, vowing to forge a "grand bargain" with Republicans to reduce the national debt and achieve comprehensive immigration reform ? all in 2013.

"It will probably be messy. It won't be pleasant," Obama told the Des Moines Register's publisher and its editor by telephone. The daily made the exchange public after the White House dropped its insistence that it be off-the-record.

Messy? Unpleasant? Well, yes. Even if he wins reelection -- hardly a done deal -- few if any analysts expect the Democrats to retake the House of Representatives. And while Democrats are forecast to hold on to the Senate, betting that the president's party will secure a filibuster-proof 60-seat majority is a fool's game ? at least according to the latest polls. That makes these promises reliant on Obama using the 'bully pulpit' of the White House more effectively than he has since taking office January 2009.

"The good news is that there's going to be a forcing mechanism to deal with what is the central ideological argument in Washington right now, and that is: How much government do we have and how do we pay for it?" Obama said in the interview. He was referring to the so-called "fiscal cliff" at the end of 2012 ? the looming expiration of the Bush-era tax cuts, the painful automatic domestic and military spending cuts known as the "sequester," as well as the end of a temporary payroll tax reduction and some unemployment benefits.

The president has pushed for letting the Bush-era tax cuts (which he renewed entirely in late 2010 in the face of Republican pressure) expire for individuals making $200,000 or more or families pulling in $250,000 and above. Obama signaled that his longstanding offer for deficit- and debt-reduction will still be on the table, a move that could irk Democrats.

"I am absolutely confident that we can get what is the equivalent of the grand bargain that essentially I've been offering to the Republicans for a very long time, which is $2.50 worth of cuts for every dollar in spending, and work to reduce the costs of our health care programs," Obama said. (The White House quickly clarified that he meant $2.50 of spending cuts for every dollar in new tax revenue).

"We can easily meet ? 'easily' is the wrong word -- we can credibly meet the target that the Bowles-Simpson Commission established of $4 trillion in deficit reduction, and even more in the out-years, and we can stabilize our deficit-to-GDP ratio in a way that is really going to be a good foundation for long-term growth. Now, once we get that done, that takes a huge piece of business off the table.

"The second thing I'm confident we'll get done next year is immigration reform," said Obama, who has drawn fire from the Hispanic community for not keeping his 2008 campaign pledge to do just that. Republicans, meanwhile, have accused him of softening immigration enforcement for political gain.

"Since this is off the record, I will just be very blunt. Should I win a second term, a big reason I will win a second term is because the Republican nominee and the Republican Party have so alienated the fastest-growing demographic group in the country, the Latino community," he said. "And this is a relatively new phenomenon. George Bush and Karl Rove were smart enough to understand the changing nature of America. And so I am fairly confident that they're going to have a deep interest in getting that done. And I want to get it done because it's the right thing to do and I've cared about this ever since I ran back in 2008."

Republican opposition doomed immigration the last time around, and the political payoff is not always clear -- but senior Obama adviser David Plouffe told reporters Wednesday that the GOP could not afford to drive off Latino voters if the party hopes to survive.

"Republicans basically walked away from their belief that we need immigration reform. My suspicion is if you lose a presidential election to Latino voters by 40 points in a fastly (sic) growing country, the responsible thing to do if you're in that party that's losing by 40 points is to look in the mirror," Plouffe said.

Plouffe also said he thought he saw "more and more Republican senators ? saying they're more open to revenue" (meaning: tax increases). "And most Democrats have shown themselves open to do tough things on spending," he added. "It's going to require both parties coming together," Plouffe said.

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? Red gold, green gold -- a ground-breaking initiative has found a way of changing the colour of the world's most iconic precious metal.

A University of Southampton team have discovered that by embossing tiny raised or indented patterns onto the metal's surface, they can change the way it absorbs and reflects light -- ensuring our eyes don't see it as 'golden' in colour at all.

The finding results from a major initiative funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) targeting the development of a new generation of nanotechnology-enabled materials.

Equally applicable to other metals such as silver and aluminium, this breakthrough opens up the prospect of colouring metals without having to coat or chemically treat them. This could deliver valuable economic, environmental and other benefits.

The technique could be harnessed in a wide range of industries for anything from manufacturing jewellery to making banknotes and documents harder to forge.

"This is the first time the visible colour of metal has been changed in this way," says Professor Nikolay Zheludev, Deputy Director of Southampton's Optoelectronics Research Centre, who led the project.

"The colours of the objects we see all around us are determined by the way light interacts with those objects. For instance, an object that reflects red light but absorbs other wavelengths will appear red to the human eye."

"This is the fundamental principle we have exploited in this project. By embossing metals with patterns only around 100 nanometres across, we've found that we can control which wavelengths of light the metal absorbs and which it reflects." *

The precise shape and height or depth of the patterns determine exactly how light behaves when it strikes the metal and therefore what colour is created. The technique can be used to produce a wide range of colours on a given metal.

A silver ring, for example, could be decorated with a number of different patterns, making one part of it appear red, another part green and so on; metal features with sophisticated optical properties that would be almost impossible to imitate could be incorporated into documents as security features.

The nano-patterning is carried out at the research level using well-established techniques such as ion beam milling, which may be envisaged as sand-blasting on the atomic scale.

However, the concept may be scaled for industrial production using such processes as nano-imprint, whereby large areas are stamped out from a master template in a manner comparable to CD/DVD production.

"We've filed a patent application to cover our work," Professor Zheludev says, "and we're currently talking to a number of organisations about taking our breakthrough towards commercialisation."

* The key to this capability is the fact that each individual feature contained within the pattern is smaller than the wavelength of the incident light. Technically speaking, the nano-patterned metal is therefore a 'metamaterial', engineered to provide properties not found in nature.

Major powers examine long-shot options in Iran talks

BRUSSELS/VIENNA (Reuters) - Big powers may ask Iran for stricter limits on its nuclear work if it wants an easing of harsh sanctions - a long-shot approach aimed at yielding a negotiated solution that has eluded them for more than a decade.

A solution to the standoff is increasingly urgent. The longer the impasse goes on, the closer Iran could get to the technological threshold of a capability to build an atom bomb, raising the odds of Israeli strikes against its installations.

Western diplomats say the possibility of revising their negotiating tactic is under discussion as they prepare for possible talks with Iran after the November 6 presidential election in the United States, following three inconclusive rounds this year.

One option could be for each side to put more on the table - both in terms of demands and possible rewards - than in previous meetings in a bid to break the stalemate despite deep skepticism about the chances of a breakthrough any time soon.

Years of diplomacy and sanctions have failed to resolve a dispute between the West and Iran over its nuclear program, raising fears of Israeli military action against its arch foe and a new Middle East war damaging to a fragile world economy.

"The next meeting would have to be well prepared," said one Western diplomat. "There could be interesting new developments, like more demands and more concessions."

Israel, believed to be the Middle East's only nuclear power and convinced a nuclear Tehran would pose a mortal threat, says Iran could arrive at the point of being able to "weaponise" enriched uranium next spring or summer.

Iran denies accusations it is seeking nuclear weapons and has so far refused to meet demands that it scales back its atomic activity, insisting on immediate sanctions relief.

Western powers have rejected that and, instead, offered limited incentives focused on technology cooperation. They have also ramped up punitive measures to draw Iran, one of the world's biggest oil producers, into meaningful talks.

Another Western diplomat cautioned that a new strategy for diplomacy had yet to be finalized by Iran's six interlocutors: the United States, China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany.

But he said a new meeting with Iran soon after the U.S. vote could not be ruled out, and preparations were under way.

"It is possible there may indeed be some meeting in November to discuss an offer ... and that we ask more of the Iranians, in which case we could offer more," this diplomat said.

SEARCHING FOR SOLUTIONS

In a possible sign diplomacy could gather speed after the U.S. election, the New York Times has reported Washington and Iran have agreed in principle to hold one-on-one negotiations, although the White House denied that any talks had been set.

In the earlier meetings this year, the powers called on Iran to stop producing higher-grade enriched uranium, shut down its Fordow underground facility and ship out its stockpile.

Iran rejected the proposal, described by Western officials as an initial step to build confidence, and demanded recognition of its "right" to refine uranium, activity which can have both civilian and military purposes, as well as lifting of sanctions.

But for Iran to secure any relaxation of the pressure, it would have to take substantial additional action beyond the so-called "stop, shut and ship" demand, another Western official said. "For a lifting of sanctions they would have to do much more than just these three steps," the official said.

A more-more strategy would make sense as the West would want to see strict limits to Iran's entire enrichment program, said nuclear expert Mark Fitzpatrick of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) think-tank.

Any new proposal would also have to take into account Iran's growing holdings of refined uranium as well as its expanding enrichment capacity, according to Fitzpatrick.

In return for making concessions, Iran "will need some sanctions relief beyond the meager measures that were offered in the earlier rounds of talks," he added.

But Ali Vaez of the International Crisis Group said a "gulf of expectations" between negotiators and the irreversible nature of many sanctions made a "more-for-more" strategy implausible.

"Managing to seal a 'big-for-big' deal in the total absence of trust would be equivalent to reversing the law of gravity."

Iran has enough low-enriched uranium for several atomic bombs if it were refined to a high degree, but may still be a few years away from being able to assemble a missile if it decided to go down that path, analysts say.

Experts say it has become increasingly unrealistic to expect Iran to suspend all its enrichment, even if this demand is enshrined in a series of U.N. Security Council resolutions, and the aim should be to restrain the activity as much as possible.

Daryl Kimball of the Washington-based Arms Control Association said high-level U.S.-Iranian talks could help to reach a deal and reduce the risk of a nuclear-armed Iran.

Negotiators should seek to limit Iran's enrichment, cap its stockpiles and give U.N. inspectors more access to ensure it does not engage in weapons-related nuclear activity. In return, there would be a "phased rollback of sanctions," he said.

"These opportunities ? I'm sure everyone would appreciate them in Richmond," said Althwaini. "We need that.??

Now his school could help grow the jobs for their graduates. A joint marketing plan brings together economic developers and public colleges to bring new business to Virginia, and expand the ones already here.?

"The idea is to bring universities together on an economic development platform so we can have a bigger footprint in the marketplace and talk about Virginia globally," said Virginia Economic Development Partnership President and CEO, Martin Briley.

The focus is to combine the strengths of business - and Virginia's graduates - a collaboration of the best the state has to offer. One key example is a Rolls Royce plant that opened in Prince George.?

"That's a great example of universities working with VEDP economic development locally and state-wide to come up with a reason for Rolls Royce to come here beyond the normal," said Secretary of Commerce and Trade James Cheng.??

Governor Bob McDonnell has added $230 million to the biennial budget to support public universities and incentives to research target areas that could bring top jobs to Virginia.??

Now it's up to state and education leaders to pass the word along to companies and give them a good reason to open up shop in Virginia.??

The agreement will be in effect until June of 2014.

LONDON (AP) ? The BBC faced growing fallout Monday over sexual abuse allegations against a popular children's TV entertainer, as Prime Minister David Cameron accused the broadcaster of changing its story about why it killed a news segment on the accusations.

The powerful broadcaster tried to stem the damage, saying in a statement that a top editor had stepped down from its BBC Newsnight program after he was found to have given incomplete, inaccurate explanations for the decision to keep an investigation of the late Jimmy Savile from being broadcast in December.

The scandal is one of the worst to rock the BBC, long a key player in British public life and often cited as one of the most trusted sources of accurate, unbiased information.

"The BBC is a public service broadcaster that depends on the public trust, and anything that suggests it hasn't been truthful undermines that trust," Conservative Party lawmaker Rob Wilson told The Associated Press. "That's why this is such an important issue for them."

Police are investigating accusations against Savile and say there may be more than 200 potential victims of the entertainer, the longtime host of the BBC's "Top of the Pops" and "Jim'll Fix It," recognized for his garish track suits and platinum hair.

The BBC's tough statement about editor Peter Rippon deepened the suspicion that there had been a cover-up. It is suspected of pulling the Newsnight segment because of its harsh portrayal of Savile, who was hailed as a popular fixture in children's TV when he died at 84 last year.

Wilson said the BBC has tried to evade responsibility for its long tolerance of Savile.

"They were sidestepping the story, hoping it would go away," he said. "The BBC was saying the cultural issues that led to this were in the past, but when we saw BBC looking at the Jimmy Savile issue and finding out uncomfortable things, they appeared to want to cover it up."

The BBC's backtracking prompted unusual criticism from the prime minister.

"The nation is appalled, we are all appalled by the allegations of what Jimmy Savile did and they seem to get worse by the day," Cameron said, accusing the BBC of changing its story about why it decided not to broadcast the piece.

Tim Burt, a managing partner of the Stockwell Communications crisis management firm, said the BBC faces a major blow to its reputation at a time when it is entering delicate negotiations with the government about the terms of its charter.

??????????? "So to have a civil war inside on a matter of editorial judgment and the handling of potentially criminal investigations could not have come at worse time," he said.

The BBC plans to air its own investigation into its actions on a show Monday night.

Rippon is the first BBC figure directly blamed for the broadcaster's failure to properly report on the abuse claims. He is stepping down immediately for the duration of the investigation.

The BBC Trust, the corporation's governing body, conceded there had been "inaccuracies in the BBC's own description of what happened in relation to the Newsnight investigation."

The BBC says Rippon's explanation of his decision in a blog post earlier was "inaccurate or incomplete in some respects."

The BBC is publicly funded through its license fees and various commercial enterprises; it enjoys a large degree of independence from the government but is subject to legislation passed by Parliament.

Bob Calver, a lecturer in broadcast journalism at Birmingham City University, said the BBC can expect harsh treatment at the hands of Britain's newspapers, particularly those that are part of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. empire, which has been shaken by revelations about criminal phone hacking by its reporters.

"The print media will not let this story go," he said. "Because BBC was not implicated in the phone hacking scandal, it was pointing the finger at the print media, which has long felt that the BBC is smug and gets special treatment. This is an opportunity for the print media to come back at them."

In a statement released Monday, the BBC cited three problems with Rippon's initial statements about why the segment was not aired.

The BBC said Rippon's blog indicated that Newsnight staff had no evidence against the BBC when in fact there were allegations that some of the abuse happened on BBC premises.

It also faulted Rippon for saying that all the abuse victims interviewed by the program had told police about the abuse, when in some cases the women had not done so, meaning that police were "not aware of all the allegations" against Savile.

In addition, the BBC said Rippon had indicated that there was no evidence that anyone working at the Duncroft school for emotionally disturbed girls was aware of allegations that Savile had abused girls there, when in fact there were indications that "some of the Duncroft staff knew or may have known about the abuse."

The Crown Prosecution Service also revealed Monday afternoon that it had received reports from four women who complained in 2009 that they had been abused by Savile in the 1970s but did not recommend that the cases be brought to trial.

Prosecutors had previously admitted only one such case coming to their attention. The entertainer was still alive and could have faced criminal charges.

"The original allegation was that Savile had indecently assaulted a girl under 16 at Duncroft children's home in the late 1970s," said the prosecution statement. "The three further potential offenses were an alleged indecent assault on a girl under 16 at Stoke Mandeville hospital in or around 1973; an alleged incitement of a girl under 16 to engage in a sexual act at Duncroft children's home in the late 1970s; and an alleged indecent assault on an adult in Sussex in 1970."

How not to reinvent the wheel: Five automotive tech flops | Digital ...

Cars have made great technological strides over the past 100 years, but not without a few missteps.

Technology is a wonderful thing, especially when it comes to cars. We wouldn?t have gotten from Daimler and Benz?s three-wheeled, one horsepower wagon to the Bugatti Veyron or Chevy Volt without finding new ways of making things work. However, just because an idea is new, or technically possible, that doesn?t mean it is good or practical. Here are five automotive technological dead ends.

Steering without a wheel: The Benz Patent-Motorwagen is generally considered to be the first automobile, and it was steered with a tiller instead of a steering wheel. It may have been Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz?s first idea, but a tiller is much better for controlling a ship?s rudder than a car?s steering mechanism.

Nonetheless, carmakers have continued to experiment with different types of steering. The designers of the Baker and Detroit electric cars (built in the early 1900s) used tillers, but not because they hadn?t been able to test drive the Benz. Rather, their decision was based on marketing.

Electric cars were marketed to women, primarily because their husbands didn?t want them driving too far unescorted, and the cars had pitiful ranges. The manufacturers were on the same page: They felt that the thing women loved doing most was socializing, not driving, so they arranged their car?s interiors like a lounge. Tiller steering allowed the female driver to face her passengers.

Alternative steering didn?t die with women?s liberation. Saab, the car company that was ?Born From Jets,? made a prototype with joystick steering in the early 1990s. The Honda EV-STER concept is also steered with sticks. Still, it seems like wheels are the best way to steer earthbound vehicles.

Pop-out windshield: Preston Tucker?s stillborn car was way ahead of its time. It featured a headlight that turned with the steering wheel, a padded dashboard, and structural reinforcements that were supposed to make it very safe. Not every idea was a winner, though.

The Tucker also featured a windshield that was designed to pop out of its frame in a crash, protecting occupants from glass shrapnel. Unfortunately, the car was never mass-produced; an SEC investigation and the subsequent unraveling of Tucker?s finances became the subject of the film Tucker: The Man and His Dream. The widespread use of shatter-proof laminated glass in car windshields made Tucker?s pop-out windshield unnecessary anyway.

Four-wheel steering: Anyone who has used an Ikea shopping cart knows that allowing the rear wheels to turn can really help maneuverability. Four-wheel steering is actually well within carmakers? technical ability, it just hasn?t caught on.

There has been no shortage of cars with four-wheel steering. Honda equipped the 1987 Prelude with four-wheel steering, and it became a must-have feature on the high-tech Japanese sports cars of the 1990s. The Mitsubishi 3000 GT, Nissan Skyline GT-R R33 and R34, and the Nissan 300ZX all had it.

GMC also offered four-wheel steering on its Sierra Denali full-size pickup truck from 2002 to 2004.

So why doesn?t every car have four-wheel steering? Probably for the same reason most cars do not have four-wheel drive, despite the extra traction it offers. Adding hardware to steer the rear wheels adds complexity, and cost, to a vehicle. People might not want to pay extra for systems that, admittedly, offer less of a concrete benefit than one might think.

Car companies haven?t given up on the idea, though. Acura will include four-wheel steering on the base, front-wheel drive version of its upcoming RLX sedan.

Steam power: Steam trains powered America?s first transportation revolution, so it?s not surprising that early carmakers such as Stanley, White, and Doble put serious effort into selling steam powered automobiles.

These cars worked the same way steam locomotives do. Water was heated in a boiler (usually by burning kerosene) to create steam, which pushed a piston connected to the car?s wheels.

Steam had some advantages over internal combustion. Steam engines didn?t reek of gasoline, and didn?t need to be cranked to get them started. Most importantly, steam was a familiar technology; in the 1900s it was viewed the same way gasoline is viewed today when compared to hybrids.

However, steam had far more drawbacks than anything else. Steam cars may not have needed a crank handle, but they took a long time to get going. Imagine waiting for a giant tea kettle to boil every day before your morning commute, and you?ll get the idea.

Since most steam cars had no electrical accessories, every part of the complicated starting process, from pumping fuel to opening valves to regulate pressure, had to be done manually.

Steam cars also had to be driven carefully, too. Range was dependent on the amount of water in the tank, so it varied with ambient temperature. Drivers would also have to coast whenever possible to build up a head of steam. Maybe today?s fluctuating gas prices aren?t so bad.

Jet power: Carmakers love to make their products look like jet planes, so why not use the same engines? Who cares about tail fins when you can throttle up an actual jet?

Chrysler decided to try building jet powered car in 1963, when it commissioned Ghia to build 55 bodies to house these futuristic powertrains. The Chrysler Turbine Cars were then leased to customers for evaluation, just like 21st century EVs and fuel-cell vehicles.

The Turbine Car was an impressive machine. It idled at 8,000 rpm, above the redline of most piston-engined cars, and could do 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds. It could also run on any flammable liquid, from perfume to tequila.

It may sound like the silver bullet of alternative powertrains, but the jet engine simply isn?t meant for automotive use. Jets are not as responsive as piston engines; drivers of the Chrysler would notice significant lag during acceleration. Mashing the throttle actually made the car go slower, it simply could not be rushed.

Jets may also be too exotic for the road. The Turbine?s performance was impressive, but a Chrysler equipped with a relatively small 318-cubic inch V8 could match it. Jaguar thought about using micro gas turbines to generate electricity in its C-X75 supercar, but it has switched to a 1.6-liter gasoline inline-four, which can apparently do the job just as well.

PRINCETON, N.J. ? After advancing to a playoff for third place on Saturday, the Yale men's golf team fell to Brown 2-3 on Sunday to finish in fourth place at the Oct. 20-21 Ivy League Matchplay Tournament.?

It was another difficult day out on the course at TPC Jasna Polana here in Princeton, N.J., as the Elis sought to shake off a 2-3 loss to Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon. That loss pushed the Bulldogs into a matchup against Brown on Sunday, during which they lost in a 2-3 verdict.

The two Yale golfers who tasted victory on Sunday were freshman Joe Willis and junior Sam Bernstein.

At the top of the Ivy League Matchplay leaderboard were Princeton and Dartmouth: Princeton beat Dartmouth 3-1-1 in the final to claim victory.

Sunday's golf took place on the Gary Player-designed course, which tested all the Ivy League golfers as they competed in a format that has only been employed once before in Ancient Eight play.

With the close of the Ivy League Matchplay Tournament, the Elis will break from competition until the spring season starts with the Mar. 11-12 Tiger Invitational at the Lake Course, Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Grand National in Opelika, Ala.

This season has not been without substantial success: at the season-opening Sept. 17-18 Adams Cup, the Bulldogs charged to a second-place finish as Bernstein took home the individual medal.?Then, the Elis clinched the Sept. 29-30 Macdonald Cup for the second straight year.

Microsoft Surface pre-orders in Canada, UK are not delayed (Update)

Microsoft's Surface for Windows RT appears to be flying off the virtual shelves, however it seems some of the customers who've pre-ordered will be waiting about a week longer than they thought. We've received several tips from readers in Canada and the UK indicating they've received emails (as seen above, check after the break for similar reports from Twitter) explaining that their tablets will be shipping on November 2nd, instead of October 26th as originally scheduled when they put their requests in days ago. There's no reason currently listed for the delay, however we have contacted Microsoft for further comment on the situation. Currently the Surface is listed as completely sold out on the UK and Canada Microsoft Store sites, and in the US all three variants are no longer promised for delivery on release date. It's been reported that Microsoft is building up to five million of the devices for launch this fall, hopefully they can all find their way to good homes sooner rather than later.

Update: A Microsoft spokesperson has responded, informing us that the emails sent out were incorrect, so "all customers should expect their devices by the original date given." It will be following up with customers to let them know their shipping date has not changed, and you can read the full statement for yourself after the break.

Samsung launches Galaxy Note II in South Africa

Samsung South Africa launched its?latest mobile handset in for the South African market ? the Galaxy Note II ? at an extravagant event in Cape Town. The device is the tablet-phone hybrid follow-up from the original Galaxy Note that was released last year.

?Tonight we are launching the Galaxy Note II. Cape Town has all the characteristics of the Note II ? it?s creative, it?s vibrant and friendly ? all of which is why we decided to launch it here. The original Note sold over 10-million units, but I am sure the Note II will surpass it,? said Michelle Potgieter, Samsung?s Head of Corporate Marketing and Communications.

George Ferreira, Vice-President and COO of Samsung South Africa echoed Potgieter?s sentiments, saying that the theme of the Note II is all about being creative.

During his opening remarks at the press conference, prior to the launch, he revealed that 450-million mobile handsets are active in Africa, which equates to?one phone for every two people on the continent.

?Africa is the second biggest mobile market in the world. 50% of the internet connections are exclusive to mobile users, and smartphones are outselling PCs four to one,? Ferreira said.

He also revealed Samsung?s plans for Africa. ?Our strategy is to make sure we are ready to activate our technology across Africa. Samsung has some of the best-selling devices in the world. With our investment in Africa we see an incredible growth on the continent. The momentum of smartphones is driving the wave across Africa, and tablets are on the rise,? he said.

In terms of the Note II?s performance, Craige Fleischer, Director of Mobile Communications at Samsung Electronics SA, highlighted some of the phone?s?features and specifications.

?It uses a 5.5? screen ? it?s an increase from the previous phone, but it?s slightly thinner. We have also installed a better battery and tweaked the settings for better battery consumption. The phone will also be available on 3G and LTE networks,? Fleischer said.

The Galaxy Note II will have a variety of new features such as Multitasking, PopUp Note, PopUp Video, Quick Command, Idea Sketch and a redesigned S Plannner. The popular S Pen has also been given a slight overhaul to be handled with better ease.

Regarding all the features, Fleischer added that ?people like to have options and like to create innovative solutions. People will use the phone in different ways and we like to cater for that. We also have a number of apps being developed for the S Pen specifically.?

The Samsung Galaxy Note II will retail for around $1000 (R8000) and will be available in South Africa through?mobile service providers MTN and Vodacom. While only the 3G is now available, an LTE version will be on the market before the end of the year.

Breakthrough offers new route to large-scale quantum computing

ScienceDaily (Oct. 19, 2012) ? In a key step toward creating a working quantum computer, Princeton researchers have developed a method that may allow the quick and reliable transfer of quantum information throughout a computing device

The finding, by a team led by Princeton physicist Jason Petta, could eventually allow engineers to build quantum computers consisting of millions of quantum bits, or qubits. So far, quantum researchers have only been able to manipulate small numbers of qubits, not enough for a practical machine.

"The whole game at this point in quantum computing is trying to build a larger system," said Andrew Houck, an assistant professor of electrical engineering who is part of the research team.

To make the transfer, Petta's team used a stream of microwave photons to analyze a pair of electrons trapped in a tiny cage called a quantum dot. The "spin state" of the electrons -- information about how they are spinning -- serves as the qubit, a basic unit of information. The microwave stream allows the scientists to read that information.

"We create a cavity with mirrors on both ends -- but they don't reflect visible light, they reflect microwave radiation," Petta said. "Then we send microwaves in one end, and we look at the microwaves as they come out the other end. The microwaves are affected by the spin states of the electrons in the cavity, and we can read that change."

In an ordinary sense, the distances involved are very small; the entire apparatus operates over a little more than a centimeter. But on the subatomic scale, they are vast. It is like coordinating the motion of a top spinning on the moon with another on the surface of Earth.

"It's the most amazing thing," said Jake Taylor, a physicist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the Joint Quantum Institute at the University of Maryland, who worked on the project with the Princeton team. "You have a single electron almost completely changing the properties of an inch-long electrical system."

For years, teams of scientists have pursued the idea of using quantum mechanics to build a new machine that would revolutionize computing. The goal is not build a faster or more powerful computer, but to build one that approaches problems in a completely different fashion.

Standard computers store information as classical "bits," which can take on a value of either 0 or 1. These bits allow programmers to create the complex instructions that are the basis for modern computing power. Since Alan Turing took the first steps toward creating a computer at Princeton in 1936, engineers have created vastly more powerful and complex machines, but this basic binary system has remained unchanged.

The power of a quantum computer comes from the strange rules of quantum mechanics, which describe the universe of subatomic particles. Quantum mechanics says that an electron can spin in one direction, representing a 1, or in another direction, a 0. But it can also be in something called "superposition" representing all states between 1 and 0. If scientists and engineers can build a working machine that takes advantage of this, they would open up entirely new fields of computing.

"The point of a quantum computer is not that they can do what a normal computer can do but faster; that's not what they are," said Houck. "The quantum computer would allow us to approach problems differently. It would allow us to solve problems that cannot be solved with a normal computer."

Mathematicians are still working on possible uses for a quantum system, but the machines could allow them to accomplish tasks such as factoring currently unfactorable numbers, breaking codes or predicting the behavior of molecules.

One challenge facing scientists is that the spins of electrons, or any other quantum particles, are incredibly delicate. Any outside influences, whether a wisp of magnetism or glimpse of light, destabilizes the electrons' spins and introduces errors.

Over the years, scientists have developed techniques to observe spin states without disturbing them. (This year's Nobel Prize in physics honored two scientists who first demonstrated the direct observation of quantum particles.) But analyzing small numbers of spins is not enough; millions will be required to make a real quantum processor.

To approach the problem, Petta's team combined techniques from two branches of science: from materials science, they used a structure called a quantum dot to hold and analyze electrons' spins; and from optics, they adopted a microwave channel to transfer the spin information from the dot.

To make the quantum dots, the team isolated a pair of electrons on a small section of material called a "semiconductor nanowire." Basically, that means a wire that is so thin that it can hold electrons like soda bubbles in a straw. They then created small "cages" along the wire. The cages are set up so that electrons will settle into a particular cage depending on their energy level.

This is how the team reads the spin state: electrons of similar spin will repel, while those of different spins will attract. So the team manipulates the electrons to a certain energy level and then reads their position. If they are in the same cage, they are spinning differently; if they are in different cages, the spins are the same.

The second step is to place this quantum dot inside the microwave channel. This allows the team to transfer the information about the pair's spin state -- the qubit.

Petta said the next step is to increase the reliability of the setup for a single electron pair. After that, the team plans to add more quantum dots to create more qubits. Team members are cautiously optimistic. There appear to be no insurmountable problems at this point but, as with any system, increasing complexity could lead to unforeseen difficulties.

"The methods we are using here are scalable, and we would like to use them in a larger system," Petta said. "But to make use of the scaling, it needs to work a little better. The first step is to make better mirrors for the microwave cavity."
