Rescuers respond to a fatal shark attack about 90 miles north of Perth, Australia, on July 14. A surfer was killed by a shark, bringing to five the number of fatal attacks in Western Australia in the past year.

Following a record number of attacks this year, and retracting his earlier stand, the leader of a state on Australia's west coast announced Thursday that any great white sharks seen near beachgoers would be killed in order to prevent attacks on humans.
"We will always put the lives and safety of beachgoers ahead of the shark," Western Australia Premier Colin Barnett told ABC Radio Australia.?"This is, after all, a fish ? let's keep it in perspective."
Previously, sharks could only be hunted if there had already been an attack on a swimmer and, even after a fatal attack last March, Barnett had ruled out changing that strategy, saying "the ocean is the domain of the shark and we go there with a risk always."
But the state has now seen five deaths this year ? out of a total of just 12 recorded over the last 100 years.
The new strategy?includes more watercraft and helicopter patrols as well, but it was not welcomed by everyone.
The Conservation Council of Western Australia called it a "guilty until proven innocent" approach,?The Australian reported.
Authorities are searching for the large shark after it killed a surfer on Saturday off the Australia coast. The shark was believed to be at least 13 feet long. NBC's Duncan Golestani reports.
"This may be the most reactionary and archaic response I have seen in my lifetime of shark study," added George Burgess, curator of the University of Florida's International Shark Attack File.

"Such methods run totally in contrast to modern scientific thinking," he told NBC News, noting that "no evidence" from the 5,000 attacks on file suggest that sharks have become more aggressive toward humans. In fact, only two or maybe three of those attacks can even be attributed to one shark involved in multiple strikes.
Western Australia's strategy, he added, "is particularly ill-founded in that it involves a protected species ? an animal already acknowledged to be in trouble not only in Australia but in most areas of its biological range.
"We're supposed to be smarter than the average shark," he said, adding that scientists know general shark migratory patterns and that can be used to better warn beachgoers and even close beaches ahead of time when needed.
Great white sharks have been a protected species in Australian waters for more than a decade, but Barnett's fisheries minister last July suggested it might be time to review that.
A great white shark attacked and killed a 33-year-old diver in Australia, the fourth such attack in seven months. NBC's Annabelle Roberts reports.
"I wonder if research might tell us that there are now much greater number of ?great whites than ever before, and maybe we should look at whether they should remain a protected species," Norman Moore told reporters.
Burgess said any culling would further threaten the species. "It's sad they're going after one of the animals that can least take that fishing pressure" since it is relatively scarce in the ocean.
More than 100 species of shark are found in Australian waters but most are not aggressive. The great white, tiger and bull sharks are considered the most dangerous.?
Great whites prefer the colder and temperate waters of Australia's south, while tiger and bull sharks are more common in northern tropical waters.
Burgess said there is no evidence showing that sharks "hang around" beaches and instead they tend to follow migratory patterns in search of food like whales.
Still, France last month authorized a cull of around 20 sharks off its Indian Ocean island of Reunion after a series of attacks in the surfing?hot spot.

In the U.S., "preventive hunting of white sharks" is not allowed,?Monica Allen, a spokeswoman for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told NBC News. "White sharks are an important part of the ocean ecosystem," she said, and instead "coastal communities and states use public education to help reduce the risk of shark attacks, which are rare."
Burgess said great whites along both U.S. coasts probably number in the low thousands, and Allen said the species appears to be seeing pressure.
"In the Atlantic, white sharks are prohibited from being landed by fishermen because of the status of the stock," she said. "NOAA is also reviewing a petition to consider listing the Pacific white shark under the Endangered Species Act."

A New Jersey mom allegedly faked terminal cancer and profited through fundraisers, an ebook about her struggle and rallied supporters to pay for her wedding as a dying wish. Her sister discovered and exposed the fraud.
Lori Stilley, 40, was arrested on Wednesday in Delran, N.J., and charged with theft by deception. She has been released on a $25,000 bail.
Stilley allegedly told her family and friends in February 2011 that she had been diagnosed with Stage III bladder cancer and would be undergoing radiation and chemotherapy, according to the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office.
She posted frequently about her struggle on Facebook and on her own website, but was guarded about her supposed treatment, refusing to let loved ones join her for doctor appointments or treatment.
"She never let anyone go to the doctor with her. She had said that she just wanted to do this alone," Stilley's sister Lisa DiGiovanni told ABCNews.com. "I had really never pressed her, but thinking back, I wish I did."
DiGiovanni had been "completely devastated" by the news of her only sister's illness, and spear headed the efforts for fundraising and supporting Stilley.
A T-shirt campaign rasied more than $8,400 and a cash raffle raised an additional $1,000.
In April 2011, Stilley told her sister that her cancer had become Stage IV. Stilley told DiGiovanni to post the news on Facebook, but not to tell their parents. DiGiovanni found this strange, but did as her sister asked.
"She had said to me, 'There are only two things that I want: to turn 40 and to marry Bill,' who was her then-boyfriend," DiGiovanni said. "So I said to her that I can't make October come any faster, but I can plan a wedding."
With help from friends and the community, DiGiovanni planned the wedding in 10 days and Stilley wed her then-boyfriend. She wrote an ebook about her struggle with cancer, the sale of which generated more than $3,000.
"The gifts Stilley received were not just financial," the prosecutor's office said in a statement. "A friend created a meal calendar that was posted on Stilley's website that enabled people to prepare and deliver meals for Stilley. Dates were scheduled months in advance by people who committed to make and drop off dinners."
Stilley told loved ones that she was entering hospice in November 2011, telling her 7-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter that she was going to die, DiGiovanni said.
"She sat down and she told them that she was going to become an angel," DiGiovanni said.
On the day Stilley was supposed to enter hospice, she said the hospice workers had come and then left because her blood pressure was normal and she had started to feel better, her sister said. She posted on Facebook that a miracle was happening and her tumors were disappearing.
"That moment is when I just knew, I felt in my heart that she had made it all up and and a lot of other people felt the same way," DiGiovanni said. "As people would question her, she would unfriend them and her husband would threaten them."
DiGiovanni confronted her sister.
"I said I wanted to go with her [to her next doctor's appointment] because it didn't make any sense to me and she got pretty mad at me," she said. "You're not allowed to question her."
When DiGiovanni was convinced her sister was faking the cancer, she said she felt a responsibility to go to the police.
"Everything I've done has been out of love," she said. "I just felt that I had to do something."
DiGiovanni's decision has divided her family.

"My dad says that I went against the family, but what I did was out of love for my sister and trying to protect my niece and my nephew," she said. DiGiovanni said her parents have been led to believe that she is the one who is lying and that Stilley is really sick.
DiGiovanni is unsure if Stilley's husband knew what was going on.
"In the beginning, I can't imagine that he did know because he was just as depressed and devastated as we were," she said. "I think he's in protect mode, but I really wish I knew what he knew."
Joel Bewley, spokesman for the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office, said that neither Stilley's husband nor anyone else has been charge in connection to the crime, but he could not comment on whether other charges may be forthcoming.
"Yesterday when I saw her mug shot on the Internet, I ended up in tears," DiGiovanni said. "I still love my sister to death and I really wish that somebody would give her the help that she needs."
DiGiovanni said her sister has no history of mental illness and she has puzzled over why she would do this.
"Clearly, this is not something that in her normal state of mind that she would do," she said. "I don't think this had anything to do with financial gain, just a means of getting attention. I almost think she doesn't know what she's doing. I think the attention has been so addictive that she can't even stop it."
Neither Stilley nor her attorney responded to request for comment.

Moving along to dedicated speakers, you might recall the SoundFly BT, which recently got outed during its trip to the FCC. The 20-watt Bluetooth-equipped unit is strictly intended to plug directly into wall outlets, having only a status light with no inputs or buttons. It'll set you back $149 when it hits shelves, and if you tack another another $50 you can get an AirPlay-equipped version instead. We gave the BT a quick listen and it sounded surprisingly big with a fair amount of bass extension -- impressive considering it's petite and it plug-friendly design. A Harmon rep even noted that the hotel we were in was interested in procuring some for its rooms. Sadly, the units aren't remotely water-resistant, even though our demo area was a bathroom.
Lastly, we're actually most intrigued by the $59 Harman / Kardon BTA 10 dongle. The nearly matchbook-sized box connects to any speaker via its 3.5mm jack, allowing you to stream over Bluetooth 4.0 on the fly. Power is supplied via a micro-USB cable, and a blue indicator light lets you know that it's powered up. Harmon's mainly created it to add Bluetooth functionality to its non-wireless speakers, but it can be used with any speaker of your choice. We're also told that it overs very high-quality, despite being Bluetooth, thanks to some in-house development dubbed as TrueStream. It was roughly this time last year that Amazon's Kindle Fire showed us just how successful an aggressively priced 7-inch tablet could be, becoming, arguably the go-to gift of the last holiday season. I just wanted to share with everyone how thankful I have been for Skinnymom.com during my pregnancy! Nanochains mark micrometastases for early diagnosis, treatment
Malignant cells that leave a primary tumor, travel the bloodstream and grow out of control in new locations cause the vast majority of cancer deaths. New nanotechnology developed at Case Western Reserve University detects these metastases in mouse models of breast cancer far earlier than current methods, a step toward earlier, life-saving diagnosis and treatment.
A team of scientists, engineers and students across five disciplines built nanochains that home in on metastases before they've grown into new tissues, and, through magnetic resonance imaging, detect their locations.
Images of the precise location and extent of metastases could be used to guide surgery or ablation, or the same technology used to find the cancer could be used to deliver cancer-killing drugs directly to the cells before a tumor forms, the researchers suggest.
The work is described in this week's online issue of the American Chemical Society journal ACS Nano.
"Micrometastases can't be seen with the naked eye, but you have to catch them at this stage see the exact spots they're located and see them all," said Efstathios Karathanasis, assistant professor of biomedical engineering and radiology, and senior author. "Even if you miss only one, you prolong survival, but one metastasis can still kill."
Karathanasis worked with research associate Pubudu M. Peiris, graduate student Randall Toy; undergraduate students Elizabeth Doolittle, Jenna Pansky, Aaron Abramowski, Morgan Tam, Peter Vicente, Emily Tran, Elliott Hayden and Andrew Camann; medical student Zachary Berman, senior research associate Bernadette O. Erokwu, biomedical engineering professor David Wilson, chemical engineering associate professor Harihara Baskaran; and, from the Case Western Reserve School of Medicine, radiology assistant professor Chris A. Flask and pharmacology associate professor and department vice chair Ruth A. Keri.
Tumor detection technologies fail to uncover cancer cells that have taken hold in new locations because young metastases don't behave the same as established tumors.
After a breast cancer cell enters the bloodstream, it most often stops in the liver, spleen or lungs and begins overexpressing surface molecules called integrins. Integrins act as a glue between the cancer cell and the lining of a blood vessel that feeds the organ.
"We target integrins," Karathanasis said. "Normal blood vessel walls don't present integrins towards the blood site unless cancer cells attach there."
To home in on the cancer marker, the researchers first needed to build a nano device that would drift out of the central flow of the blood stream and to the blood vessel walls. The most common shape of nanoparticles is a sphere, but a sphere tends to go with the flow.
Karathanasis' team tailored nanoparticles to connect one to another much like a stack of Legos. Due to its size and shape, the oblong chain tumbles out of the main current and skirts along vessel walls.
The exterior of the chain has multiple sites designed to bind with integrins. Once one site latches on, others grab hold. Compared to nanospheres, the chains' attachment rate in flow tests was nearly 10-fold higher.
To enable a doctor to see where a relative few cancer cells sit in a sea of healthy cells, the scientists incorporated fluorescent markers and, to make the nanochains more visible in magnetic resonance imaging, four links made of iron oxide.
Next, the team tested the chains in a mouse model of an aggressive form of breast cancer that metastasizes to sites and organs much the same way it does in humans.
From established research, they knew metastases would be present five weeks into the modeling. They injected nanochains into the bloodstream and, within an hour, two imaging techniques - fluorescence molecular tomography and MRI's - showed where traveling cancer cells had established footholds, primarily in the liver, lungs and spleen.
The metastases located using the nanochains ranged from .2 to 2 millimeters across.
Later imaging at high magnification showed that these metastatic cancer cells were found mostly in the blood vessel walls, before they'd had time to grow into organ tissue.

Nanochains mark micrometastases for early diagnosis, treatment
Malignant cells that leave a primary tumor, travel the bloodstream and grow out of control in new locations cause the vast majority of cancer deaths. New nanotechnology developed at Case Western Reserve University detects these metastases in mouse models of breast cancer far earlier than current methods, a step toward earlier, life-saving diagnosis and treatment.
A team of scientists, engineers and students across five disciplines built nanochains that home in on metastases before they've grown into new tissues, and, through magnetic resonance imaging, detect their locations.
Images of the precise location and extent of metastases could be used to guide surgery or ablation, or the same technology used to find the cancer could be used to deliver cancer-killing drugs directly to the cells before a tumor forms, the researchers suggest.
The work is described in this week's online issue of the American Chemical Society journal ACS Nano.
"Micrometastases can't be seen with the naked eye, but you have to catch them at this stage see the exact spots they're located and see them all," said Efstathios Karathanasis, assistant professor of biomedical engineering and radiology, and senior author. "Even if you miss only one, you prolong survival, but one metastasis can still kill."

Peiris, graduate student Randall Toy; undergraduate students Elizabeth Doolittle, Jenna Pansky, Aaron Abramowski, Morgan Tam, Peter Vicente, Emily Tran, Elliott Hayden and Andrew Camann; medical student Zachary Berman, senior research associate Bernadette O. Erokwu, biomedical engineering professor David Wilson, chemical engineering associate professor Harihara Baskaran; and, from the Case Western Reserve School of Medicine, radiology assistant professor Chris A. Flask and pharmacology associate professor and department vice chair Ruth A. Keri.
Tumor detection technologies fail to uncover cancer cells that have taken hold in new locations because young metastases don't behave the same as established tumors.
After a breast cancer cell enters the bloodstream, it most often stops in the liver, spleen or lungs and begins overexpressing surface molecules called integrins. Integrins act as a glue between the cancer cell and the lining of a blood vessel that feeds the organ.
"We target integrins," Karathanasis said. "Normal blood vessel walls don't present integrins towards the blood site unless cancer cells attach there."
To home in on the cancer marker, the researchers first needed to build a nano device that would drift out of the central flow of the blood stream and to the blood vessel walls. The most common shape of nanoparticles is a sphere, but a sphere tends to go with the flow.
Karathanasis' team tailored nanoparticles to connect one to another much like a stack of Legos. Due to its size and shape, the oblong chain tumbles out of the main current and skirts along vessel walls.
The exterior of the chain has multiple sites designed to bind with integrins. Once one site latches on, others grab hold. Compared to nanospheres, the chains' attachment rate in flow tests was nearly 10-fold higher.
To enable a doctor to see where a relative few cancer cells sit in a sea of healthy cells, the scientists incorporated fluorescent markers and, to make the nanochains more visible in magnetic resonance imaging, four links made of iron oxide.
Next, the team tested the chains in a mouse model of an aggressive form of breast cancer that metastasizes to sites and organs much the same way it does in humans.
From established research, they knew metastases would be present five weeks into the modeling. They injected nanochains into the bloodstream and, within an hour, two imaging techniques - fluorescence molecular tomography and MRI's - showed where traveling cancer cells had established footholds, primarily in the liver, lungs and spleen.
The metastases located using the nanochains ranged from .2 to 2 millimeters across.
Later imaging at high magnification showed that these metastatic cancer cells were found mostly in the blood vessel walls, before they'd had time to grow into organ tissue.
