LOS ANGELES (AP) ? An "America's Got Talent" singer whose Afghanistan War injury claims have been called into question wouldn't face vetting by producers unless he made it into the final rounds, according to a person familiar with the production.

Timothy Michael Poe was among about 4,000 people who vied for a spot on the NBC series, which doesn't scrutinize contestants until they reach the ranks of the top 48, said the person, who wasn't authorized to discuss the issue publicly and spoke Wednesday on condition of anonymity.

NBC relies on the show's producers, FremantleMedia North America and Syco Television, to conduct background checks on contestants when the field is narrowed, the person said, which is typical among TV reality series. NBC and the show's producers have declined all comment on the Poe matter.

It's unknown whether Poe, a guitar-strumming country singer, is among the top 48 picked in a Las Vegas audition round in April or if he's out of the competition. The person would not reveal Poe's fate on the show, nor would NBC or the show's producers.

Poe, who was seen on a pre-taped episode Monday of "America's Got Talent," was among about 100 acts that the show's judges sent on to the Las Vegas round. The 48 who made that cut will start competing in live telecasts beginning July 2.

Whatever the Las Vegas outcome was for Poe, it wasn't affected by questions over his war record that arose this week. The refusal by NBC and others to say whether he's still a contender allows the drama surrounding him to be milked for a while longer ? a potential boon for the top-ranked network series that drew 11.5 million viewers last week.

On Monday's show, Poe told judges Howie Mandel, Howard Stern and Sharon Osbourne that he spent 14 years in the military and suffered a broken back and brain injury when he was hit by a grenade in Afghanistan in 2009.

"I had volunteered for a team to go out and clear buildings and help out with the wounded," Poe said during a taped interview on the show. "There was a guy who comes up with a rocket-propelled grenade. I saw it coming down, and by the time I turned and went to jump on top of my guys, I yelled 'grenade' and the blast had hit me."

Poe told the judges that he was from San Antonio, Texas. The TV show listed his age as 35.

According to military records, Poe served with the Minnesota Army National Guard from December 2002 through May 2011, working as a supply specialist. Records show he was deployed in Kosovo from Oct. 10, 2007 to July 15, 2008, and then served in Afghanistan for about a month in 2009.

"Sgt. Poe's official military records do not indicate that he was injured by a grenade in combat while serving in Afghanistan in 2009, as he reports," Lt. Col. Kevin Olson, a spokesman for the Minnesota National Guard, said in a statement.

"We looked very closely at his record," Olson said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "We did not find something to substantiate what he said."

Olson's statement Wednesday also said the Minnesota National Guard had no record of Poe being shot while in Iraq, as a Dallas TV station reported last month in a story that featured Poe.

Efforts to arrange an interview with Poe on Wednesday were not successful.

Airtime: Yes, we look at your video chats ? but for your own good

Airtime, a browser-based video chat service, launched on Tuesday.?It's shiny, new and created by Napster co-founders Sean Parker and Shawn Fanning. It's also prone to taking snapshots of your video chats and sending them to trained Airtime employees, who review them for inappropriate content.

Sounds somewhat creepy, right? That's what I thought, so I had a lengthy conversation with an Airtime spokesperson who broke down what happens in the background,?while?you use the service. The details will probably still leave you feeling a bit uneasy, but it's?better to be informed and uncomfortable than to be caught completely?off guard.

What is Airtime?
As you may know,?Airtime is essentially a browser-based video chat service which relies on your Facebook identity. All you have to do is grab a webcam, head to the Airtime website and login using your Facebook account ? no downloads or installations are required.

The service will allow you to video-chat with your Facebook friends or match up with strangers, based on location and shared Facebook interests. (Your identity isn't revealed to the strangers until you choose to share your name, mind you.) If you're not particularly charmed by your chat partner, you can simply click "next" and go on to the next one.

As we pointed out when we first covered Airtime, the service works a lot like Chatroulette???a site which randomly paired strangers up for video chats.?The trouble with Chatroulette, of course, was that many users ??ahem ??exposed themselves on camera.?

We speculated that?Airtime might simply be hoping that associating its users'?Facebook accounts ? and in theory, their real identities ? with their Airtime usage might discourage them from getting indecent.

But there's oh-so-much-more to how Airtime is trying to avoid the so-called "Chatroulette?penis problem."

Smile!?You're in a snapshot!
Airtime's spokesperson tells me that the company invested significant amounts into the technology used to maintain user safety. In fact, the team dedicated to this task is by far its largest, by head count. A large portion of these Airtime employees are trained to analyze and evaluate abusive behavior?? and to nip it in the bud.

According to Airtime, when?you have a video chat with a stranger?? meaning someone who is not?one of your Facebook friends?? the service quietly takes snapshots. How often these snapshots are taken is determined by an algorithm which assigns a risk percentage to each user, based on how likely he or she might be to engage in inappropriate behavior. (Factors used to determine this risk percentage include???but are not limited to?? age, gender, location, and the time the service is being used.)

As soon as these snapshots are taken, the spokesperson tells me, they are analyzed by a number of automated filters, which check, among other things, for the presence of a face and the luminosity of the image. (The assumption is that?you are theoretically more likely to be engaging in inappropriate behavior if you are sitting in a dimly lit room.) The Airtime spokesperson refrained from elaborating further on the nature of the other filters used to analyze snapshots, explaining that this could potentially compromise some of their effectiveness.

Wait?? what did you say about someone looking at my video chats?
Any snapshots which are deemed to be showing potentially inappropriate behavior?? which according to the Airtime terms of service includes?nudity, violence, animal cruelty, drug use and more ? are flagged and sent to the Airtime's Tier 1 safety team.

The trained professionals who make up this team are able to view the flagged snapshot as well as a user's snapshot history in order to best determine if he or she is engaging in inappropriate behavior. Though each snapshot is associated with an individual's Facebook user ID, Airtime assured us that?safety reps are not able to view any other user information.

If members of the Tier 1 safety team believe that a snapshot displays behavior which violates the service's terms of service, they will escalate it to the Tier 2 team. Members of this second team have additional training which will help them determine whether a user should be permanently banned from Airtime?? and whether there is a need to notify authorities. The policy is "one strike and you're out," says the Airtime spokesperson.

Are Airtime bans really permanent?
There's currently no way to use Airtime without a Facebook account. So when a member of the service's safety team bans you, he or she is banning your Facebook identity. In theory, you could try to make a new Facebook account and use that to log back into Airtime, but there are roadblocks.

"You have to demonstrate social behavior before you can get on the site," explains the Airtime spokesperson. Just as a credit card company might look at your credit history, Airtime looks at your Facebook history in order to determine whether it will grant you access. If you do not have a minimum number of Facebook friends, you will not be able to get onto Airtime. This minimum friend threshold, among other factors, makes it more difficult for banned users to regain access to Airtime by simply creating new Facebook accounts.

How long does Airtime keep these snapshots?... and why?
Snapshots are stored indefinitely "for historical perspective" and to "detect abuse patterns," the Airtime spokesperson told me. This is, of course, outlined in the service's rather intimidating privacy policy.

This longterm storage struck me as startling, so I asked Jeff Hermes???director of the Digital Media Law Project at Harvard?University's?Berkman Center for Internet and Society???for some perspective.

"When we talk about privacy concerns, the primary question we have is whether there is sufficient notice given to users about whether their information is going to be stored," he explained. "We review these issues from the perspective of whether there is a legal issue."

The terms of service and privacy guidelines made online by most companies, such as Airtime, tend to be "deemed acceptable" by courts, Hermes told me.

This scares me! Can I somehow make Airtime delete my snapshots?
You?can submit a request to Airtime, via its support email address, to have?your snapshots deleted. But if you do it, your Airtime account will be deactivated as well.

A member of the service's safety team will manually review your snapshots and trigger the deletion process within about 24 hours. All data associated with your account and identity will be deleted, unless there are legal reasons to retain the images.

Once your account is deleted, due to your own request, you will not be able to instantly reactivate it. A member of Airtime's safety team will have to review the reasons for deletion and may grant reactivation on a case-by-case basis.

Why did this one guy get banned, while this other one?did not?
While the Airtime spokesperson was explaining the details of the service's safety procedures to me, I was left confused.?Christopher "Moot" Poole, founder of 4chan and Canvas, tweeted that he'd been banned within 45 seconds of using Airtime while?BuzzFeed's Matt Buchanan sent someone a very obscene video without any consequences.

This was because Poole "drew a picture which violated [Airtime's] terms of service" while chatting with a stranger, says the spokesperson. Buchanan, on the other hand, sent an obscene video to a Facebook friend of his. Snapshots are not taken of video chats between Facebook friends. I've reached out to Poole to get his side of the story?? though he hasn't replied?? but Buchanan confirmed the details of his own situation in a BuzzFeed blog post.

What does this all mean?
Airtime's?slightly unnerving safety procedures mean the same thing any other safety procedures seem to mean lately: That you have to?sacrifice?some privacy in exchange for safety.

"I'm not sure that there is a perfect technological solution for this," says Hermes.?"It's a trade off and a judgment that needs to be made by the users."

Chester Wisniewski, senior security advisor at Sophos, echoed that sentiment. Privacy for safety, especially in a product that's free. "That's the trade off," he told me.?"You have to decide."

The expansion will help the Visteon electronics joint venture support rapidly growing customer needs.?

The expansion boosts the plant's yearly capacity by almost 50 percent and allows it to incorporate more world-class manufacturing equipment and processes for improved operational efficiency.?

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) ? Fighting stage-four ovarian cancer, Carol Delzatto has more doctor appointments than she cares to count. But this day, she is beaming as Dr. Pamela Sutton comes into sight, greeting her patient and calling her beautiful. Delzatto looks forward to her monthly meeting with the palliative care doctor, where she won't be pricked and won't be rushed, just listened to and offered help.

Hospitals across the country have been adding programs in palliative care ? which focuses on treating pain, minimizing side effects, coordinating care among doctors and ensuring the concerns of patients and their families are addressed ? at a feverish pace. The field has expanded so rapidly that a majority of American hospitals now have palliative programs, to the delight of patients who say they've finally found relief and a sympathetic ear.

Palliative care has its roots in the 1970s, but was slow to grow. Several pieces of research helped to advance the cause, though, showing widespread untreated pain in hospitals and nursing homes and the positive impact palliative programs had on such patients.

"She's not writing. She is just looking at me and listening and feeling," said Delzatto, 67, during her visit to Broward General Medical Center, where Sutton helped start the palliative care program more than a decade ago.

Dr. Diane Meier of Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, who directs the Center to Advance Palliative Care, says one of the discipline's greatest benefits is that it looks at the patient as a whole.

"Patients see a different person for every single part of their body or every problem. The patient as a whole person gets lost," said Meier, who won a MacArthur fellowship for her palliative work. "The patient is a person, not a problem list, not a list of different organ systems with different problems, not a list of different diseases. So we end up serving in a quarterback role for the entire medical system."

In 2000, there were 658 palliative programs in hospitals, according to the Center to Advance Palliative Care, representing about one-quarter of American hospitals. By 2009, about 63 percent of hospitals had palliative teams, with a total of 1,568 programs recorded. The field is expected to continue growing as awareness and acceptance spreads, just in time to help baby boomers ? the 78 million Americans born between 1946 and 1964 ? as they move toward old age and begin developing more serious and life-threatening illnesses.

Though the programs and their scope vary widely, a common scenario might look like this: A patient is diagnosed with lung cancer, and a palliative care team's assistance is enlisted from the start, working alongside oncologists and other specialists. The palliative team may include doctors and nurses as well as a social worker and chaplain. Together, they coordinate care among the many medical professionals, have long consults with the patients and their families to answer questions, and may preventively prescribe medications for likely side effects of treatment, from pain to constipation to nausea.

The palliative team has a clear vision of the patients' goals and personal philosophies and, depending on these factors, might help steer them away from treatments that are determined to be more painful than they're worth. Though palliative doctors share some similarities with hospice doctors in this regard, their goal is still to cure, and their patients are not considered to be at the end of their lives, they are simply facing a serious illness.

Besides cancer, their help is commonly employed for treatment of heart and liver failure, HIV and AIDS, emphysema, sickle cell anemia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and a wide variety of other illnesses.

Palliative teams are sometimes met with doubt by both patients and their medical colleagues. Dr. Timothy Quill, a palliative care doctor at the University of Rochester Medical Center and president of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, concedes that patient recognition of what palliative care is remains relatively low and that resistance to the field remains among doctors untrained in the field.

Aside from misconceptions about palliative care being non-curative pain relief for patients destined to die, specialists may find a palliative team helps a patient reach a treatment decision that doesn't offer the most payment. Quill offers an example of a heart failure patient who may be considering getting a ventricular assist device.

"The economic incentives clearly favor doing aggressive medical interventions like this," Quill said. "Palliative care, it's all conversation. And conversation is not compensated in the same way that doing procedures is in our system right now."

Meier says resistance to palliative care tends to be generational, with many younger doctors embracing the field. Research on the subject has also helped prove its worth, particularly a 2010 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

That widely publicized report looked at terminal lung cancer patients and found patients who received palliative care as soon as they were diagnosed were in less pain, happier and more mobile than those who didn't receive such care, and the patients ultimately lived nearly three months longer.

Even with such scientific backing, and generally rave reviews from patients, even palliative care's most ardent backers admit it would not have spread as it has without showing cost savings to hospitals. Because a result of palliative care is shorter hospital stays, it can cut costs since many insurance plans pay a flat reimbursement for a treatment, not for the length of stay.

If a bed is freed up sooner, that means another paying customer can occupy it.

"By itself, better outcomes for patients would not be enough," Meier said. "In our society and current way of life, it is impossible to introduce any innovation whether it's surgery or drugs or any innovation if you can't show that it doesn't increase costs."

Broward General's adult and pediatric palliative teams saw more than 1,300 patients last year, but so far administrators have had trouble quantifying what the precise financial impact has been. Sutton and her colleagues have little doubt their work has resulted in fewer hospitalizations and shorter stays, but have found it hard to pinpoint the savings.

Sutton is focused this day on Delzatto, asking her about her sleep and bathroom patterns, and addressing her pain by writing prescriptions. Before seeing Sutton, the patient said she was suffering so greatly she was barely able to move. Now, she's able again to live fairly normally, browsing garage sales with a neighbor and walking the mall with her husband.

"The oncologists are focusing on chemo, the patients are focusing on cure and I think the conversations about comfort aren't happening," Sutton said.

Much of the appointment, Sutton just sits and listens, to Delzatto talking about her Mother's Day celebration, her new Kindle Fire and how she hopes to be able to go on a cruise later this year. And she hears Delzatto credit her with making her life livable again.

"They need more of you," she said.
